Dr. Robert A. Scott was appointed by the Adelphi University Board of Trustees as the ninth president and professor of anthropology and sociology in July 2000. He has built on Adelphi's rich traditions in undergraduate and graduate education and continues to link the liberal arts and sciences with professional programs. He has been the driving force behind the success Adelphi University has achieved in the past four years. Undergraduate enrollment has increased by 43 percent since September 2000. To support the increase in students, more than 140 new faculty have been hired, with 34 in fall 2003 and 42 in fall 2004. The University recently completed its first new residence hall in 36 years to accommodate growing student demand. Alumni giving has risen by nearly 620 percent. In recent years, the University has received several million-dollar gifts, the largest in its history.

Dr. Scott's philosophy of an "engaged" university is apparent in his dedication to the community. Since joining Adelphi, he has received a number of prestigious awards including: being named as One of the 100 Most Influential Long Islanders by Long Island Business News; Harbor Child Care Distinguished Service Award; Huntington Chamber of Commerce–Regional Business Partnership Award for Excellence in Higher Education; a Telly Award for Ethics in Sports on cable television; the Emerald Literati Club's 2004 and 2005 Outstanding Paper accolade; The Association for Commerce Industry and Technology Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Higher Education; the Raoul Wallenberg Humanitarian Leadership Award; the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Hispanic Counseling Center; and the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Achievement Award. The author of often-cited works on global issues, higher education, public policy, and ethics, he is chairman of the Regional Plan Association's Long Island Committee, and serves on the boards of Global Kids, Inc.; the Advisory Board to American Friends of UNESCO; the Long Island Association; and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Under his leadership, the University was elected as a non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliate of the United Nations. He has been a speaker and consultant for universities in North America, Europe, and Asia, and has represented the United States Departments of Education and State at numerous international forums.

From 1985 to July 2000, Dr. Scott served as president at Ramapo College of New Jersey, the "college of choice for global education." Ramapo is New Jersey's public liberal arts college, enrolling nearly 5,500 students, and offering liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students originate in more than 20 states and 50 countries, and the number living on campus tripled during his presidency. During his term, new academic programs were added, the College became academically and fiscally strong, with numerous awards for the curriculum and faculty; the endowment quadrupled, and the campus constructed new residence halls, a performing arts center, a dining and conference pavilion, and renovated numerous facilities for new uses. In addition, the College earned top ranking in major college guides. Net square feet of facilities increased 56 percent, and capital projects totaled nearly $90 million. In recognition of his work, Dr. Scott was named President Emeritus and awarded the Honorary Doctor of Letters degree. The mezzanine in the performing arts center was named in his honor, and the student center now bears his name.

During his tenure at Ramapo, he served for four months as acting director of the newly formed Commission on Higher Education. Earlier in his career, he served as assistant commissioner of higher education in Indiana. As a consequence, Dr. Scott is one of the few people ever to hold all three top positions in American higher education: head of an independent university, a public institution, and a state higher education coordinating board. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in English at Bucknell University and his Ph.D. at Cornell University.
