Safety Tips and Resources Safety When Dating

  • Know as much as possible about your date—name, address, workplace, friends, etc. before going out with him or her.
  • While on a date, if you become involved in a sexual interaction that makes you uncomfortable, trust your instincts and get out of the situation.
  • Before accepting a blind date, be sure that you can trust the individual making the arrangements. Meet in a public place.
  • Be cautious when giving out personal information to new friends
  • Acquaintance rape can result from poor communication. Say “no” when you mean “no,” and “yes” when you mean, “yes.” Set clear limits
  • Incidents of acquaintance rape are frequently related to the use of alcohol and drugs. Use alcohol responsibly and use extreme caution in social situations where alcohol and drugs are used.
  • There has been an increase in the number of attempted “pick up dates” in large clubs, often resulting in intimidation, such as moving into campus residence hall rooms and/or demands for food and clothing. Sometimes drugs or sex will be offered in return. Beware of people who you think are smooth and charming but you know are also overstepping their bounds.
  • Be sure to carry enough money for transportation home.
